Karl-Otto König

Karl-Otto König (born July 26, 1955 in Münster ) is a German diplomat . He has been the European Union's ambassador in Uruguay since September 2017 .

Life

After graduating from high school , König began studying law at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster in 1976 and completed guest semesters in France , Portugal and Switzerland . After taking his first state examination in law in 1984, he was an assistant at the chair for international and European law at the University of Münster between 1984 and 1986 .

In 1986 he joined the Foreign Service and, after completing his career test for the higher service, between 1988 and 1990 was first a consultant for constitutional law in the legal department of the Foreign Office and then from 1990 to 1992 chargé d' affaires at the embassy in Haiti . After his return, König was a consultant for general security issues in the Mediterranean and for bilateral relations with Spain , Portugal and Italy in the Political Department of the Foreign Office and then from 1996 to 2000 head of the legal and consular department at the Embassy in Spain.

In 2000, König became diplomatic advisor to the Federal Minister of the Interior and was then Head of Division for Latin America and Deputy Latin America Commissioner of the Foreign Office between 2003 and 2009 .

In August 2009 he succeeded Bernhard von Waldersee as ambassador to Uruguay and held this office until he was replaced by the previous consul general in Krakow , Heinz Peters , in August 2012.

Subsequently, on August 10, 2012, König became ambassador to Nicaragua as the successor to Betina Kern , who had retired . In Nicaragua he was honored in July 2015 by the Nicaraguan Foreign Ministry with the order of José de Marcoleta with the rank of "Gran Cruz".

From August 2015 to August 2017 he was the German ambassador to Panama.

At the request of the Federal Foreign Office, he took part as an official German candidate in the European selection competition for the head of the EU delegation in Montevideo. Since September 1, 2017, he has been the European Union's ambassador in Uruguay and the first German to lead an EU delegation in Latin America.

Karl-Otto König is married and has three children.
