Karl of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf

Karl August von Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf , also Carl (born November 26, 1706 at Gottorf Castle in Schleswig ; † May 31, 1727 in Saint Petersburg ) was Prince of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf from the House of Oldenburg and Protestant Prince-Bishop of Lübeck .

Life

Karl August succeeded his late father Christian August in 1726 as the 41st bishop; however, he died of the leaves before he actually took office , so that his next younger brother Adolf Friedrich took over the prince-bishopric. Later this became King of Sweden.

He had traveled to Saint Petersburg to marry the Russian Grand Duchess and later Tsarina Elizabeth Petrovna ; after the engagement, his early death prevented a marriage.

His body was transferred to Lübeck and buried in the prince-bishop's grave chapel in Lübeck Cathedral.
