Karl Bernhard Ritter

Karl Bernhard Ritter (born March 17, 1890 in Hessisch Lichtenau , † August 15, 1968 in Königstein im Taunus ) was a German Protestant theologian and politician ( DNVP ). He was one of the founders of the Berneuchen movement and wrote numerous writings on a structured, church-based spirituality .

Life

Ritter was born on March 17, 1890 in Hessisch Lichtenau as the son of the Protestant pastor Gottfried Theodor Ritter and his wife. He was a brother of the historian Gerhard Ritter (1888–1967) and the orientalist Hellmut Ritter (1892–1971). After attending school, in 1909 he began studying Protestant theology and philosophy at the universities of Heidelberg , Halle and Erlangen . During his studies he became a member of the Hallenser Wingolf . He finished his studies in 1912 with a doctorate to become Dr. phil. He then worked as a teacher at a cadet institute . At the beginning of the First World War he married the pastor's daughter Margarete Hachtmann. The couple had five children. From 1914 to 1918 he took part in the First World War as a war volunteer . During the war he was used as a soldier at the front.

Ritter had been a pastor in Berlin since 1919 and was a founding member of the Young German Confederation in the same year . From 1919 to 1921 he was a member of the Prussian constitutional assembly and was then elected to the Prussian state parliament, to which he belonged until 1924. In 1922 he helped found the Berneuchen movement.

In 1925, Ritter moved to the University Church of Marburg . Here in 1931 he was one of the founders of the Michael Brotherhood with Wilhelm Stählin and Carl Happich and became its first leader ( elder ). In addition, he was active in the high church and liturgical movement , he was also a member of the Masonic Lodge Zum Flammenden Schwert in Darmstadt, which belongs to the Great State Lodge of the Freemasons of Germany . After the National Socialists had withdrawn student pastoral care from him in 1934, he joined the Confessing Church . At the end of May 1934 he took part in the Barmen Confessing Synod, at which the Barmen Theological Declaration was adopted.

During the Second World War he stayed in Vienna . Together with his brother Gerhard he was present at the first meeting of the Reich Brotherhood Council after the end of the war from August 21 to 24, 1945 in Frankfurt-Sachsenhausen .

As pastor of the Evangelical Church of Kurhessen-Waldeck , Ritter became a councilor in 1946 and dean of the Marburg-Stadt parish in 1952 . Like his confreres Wilhelm Stählin and Herbert Goltzen , Ritter firmly refused to introduce the ordination of women in his church in 1962 . In 2007 in Kassel-Bad Wilhelmshöhe the Foundation for the Promotion of Worship Service - Karl Bernhard Ritter Foundation , which awards the Worship Prize every year .
