Baron Karl Ernst Viktor Anton von Arentschildt (from 1815: Sir , * May 5, 1778 in Harburg , † January 20, 1841 in Göttingen ) was Royal Major General of Hanover and Royal Portuguese General of Artillery .

origin

The Arentschildt family belongs to the Bremen knighthood . His parents were the captain Ludwig Friedrich Daniel (* 1745; † 14 September 1790) and Amelie von LeCoq (* 27 June 1850; † 19 June 1818). His grandfather was Major General Karl Christian Friedrich von Arentschildt .

Life

His family wanted him to become a theologian , but after the early death of his father in 1791 he went into military service. He fought in the First Coalition War as an ensign in Holland and was wounded several times. He was first adjutant to General von Troye , and later to Count Wallmoden . In 1803 he was made a lieutenant. During this time the French were already preparing to attack the province of Hanover. But in London there was nothing more to be done than to instruct General Wallmoden to gather the troops under the pretext of a maneuver. The result was that the Hanoverian troops had to capitulate with the Artlenburg Convention in 1803 .

Arentschildt promoted the later Royal German Legion (KGL) in Bremen , an activity that was punished by the French with death since October 6, 1803. At that time he lived under the name Schulmeister Müller with the bog commissioner Wehner in Stade . For his achievements he was appointed captain of the artillery in the KGL on January 13, 1804. As early as 1805 he took part in an expedition to Hanover, in 1807 and 1808 in the fighting in the Baltic States and in the bombardment of Copenhagen . From 1808 to 1813 he fought in the Spanish campaign . From 1813 to 1814 he fought with the Legion in southern France. As early as March 1809 he became a Portuguese major and supported the Bishop of Porto (also governor of the Kingdom of Portugal) Antonio de San Jose de Castro in the defense of Porto against the attacks of the French Marshal Soult . He also fought in the battles of Buçaco (September 27, 1810) and Fuentes de Onoro (May 3, 1811), where he received the British Gold Medal 1st and 2nd class and the Portuguese Cross of Merit. In the battle near El Bodon on September 25, 1811, he was able to decisively defeat the superior French with the Portuguese artillery. For this act, as well as the battle of Vitoria and the sieges of Ciudad Rodrigo and Badajoz , Arentschildt received at Wellington's instigation the thanks of the English Parliament and was knighted by George IV in 1815 .

But on November 25, 1813, he became major in the Legion, but remained in Portuguese service until the end of the war. There he became general and commander-in-chief of the artillery after the war. When the Liberal Revolution broke out in Portugal in 1820 , the General were in Lisbon. The insurgents wanted to take advantage of the absence of the British Commander-in-Chief Beresford . General Arentschildt's offer to defend the city was rejected by the then Minister of War, Don Miguel Pereira Forjas. Instead, he was released and had to leave the country within three days. So he sailed to London with Beresford, who had meanwhile arrived from Brazil . There one had no longer any use for the general, because the Hanoverian artillery was commanded by Lieutenant General Hartmann. So he officially became Major General in Hanover and received a waiting allowance, and he was also placed on British half- pay. He had been a Knight Bachelor since 1815 and commander of the Portuguese Order of Tower and Sword and later commander of the Guelph Order . He now spent his private life in Hannoversch Münden and Göttingen. In 1839 he was appointed commandant of Münden. He must have been doing horticulture during this time.

He died January 20, 1841 in Göttingen and was buried without military character in the churchyard of St. Jacobi at the Weender Tor.
