Karl Florentin zu Salm, Wild and Rheingraf zu Dhaun-Neufville (born January 14, 1638 , † September 4, 1676 in Pietersheim near Lanaken ), was an infantry general and envoy of the Republic of the Seven United Provinces .

Life

Karl Florentin was the first son of the wild and Rhine Count Friedrich Magnus zu Salm-Dhaun-Neufville (1605–1673) and his wife Marguerite Thésart (Taisart, Tissart, dame des Essars et de Lasson, baronne de Tournebu , 1619–1670), born to a niece of Cardinal Richelieu . Like his father, the governor of Sluis (1642), of Maastricht (1648) and general of the cavalry from 1665, he embarked on a military career in the course of which Wilhelm III. of Orange him in 1674 - during the Dutch-Prussian War - to lieutenant general ( luitenant-generaal ) appointed. On December 14, 1657, Karl Florentin married Marie Gabrielle de Lalaing (approx. 1640–1709) in Maastricht, the daughter of the Count of Hoogstraeten and Hornes († 1643) and Isabelle de Ligne (1623–1678). Marie Gabrielle gave birth to six children:

  • Klara Eleonore Charlotte († July 14, 1700) ∞ Maximilian Albert von Merode , Count of Merode-Montfort (* November 17, 1662; † August 4, 1716)
  • Friedrich II. Carl Magnus (December 28, 1658 - December 29, 1696) ∞ Brigitte Louise de Rubempré († August 15, 1730)
  • Maria Margarete
  • Albertine Isabella († January 29, 1715) ∞ Charles Frederic de Spinola, Count of Bronay († 1709)
  • Wilhelm Florentin (May 12, 1670 - June 6, 1707) 7 Maria Anna von Mansfeld , Princess of Fondi (October 16, 1680 - January 16, 1723), the parents of Nikolaus Leopold zu Salm-Salm
  • Heinrich Gabriel (* July 21, 1674; † October 15, 1716) ∞ Marie Therese de Croy , Marquise de Warnecq († June 18, 1713), the parents of Johann Dominik and Philipp Joseph zu Salm-Kyrburg

In 1659, Karl Florentin converted to the Roman Catholic faith. He died three weeks after an injury sustained during the siege of Maastricht in August 1676 .

genealogy

Karl Florentin, together with his father, is considered to be the founder of the "Flemish" line or the Neufville line of the Salm family , known as the " Rheingrafen von Salm". His second son Wilhelm Florentin founded the branch "Salm-Hoogstraeten" on the basis of the maternal inheritance Hoogstraeten , from which the on January 14, 1739 Charles VI. dignified house Salm-Salm emerged . Karl Florentin's third son Heinrich Gabriel founded the “Salm- Leuze ” branch , from which the Salm- Kyrburg house, which was ruled on February 21, 1743 by Charles VII , arose.

trendsetter

After his title of nobility, Rheingraf , a type of trousers popular until the 18th century was called Rheingrafenhose (French: Rhingrave ). It is reported that Karl Florentin stayed at the court of Louis XIV around 1660 as envoy of the States General and caused a sensation there with his skirt-like trousers. This is how wearing this type of trousers emerged as a fashion trend . Louis XIV wore the Rheingrafenhose on ceremonial occasions.

Tomb

A statue with the image of Karl Florentin was created by the Flemish sculptor Pieter Scheemaeckers (1640–1714). She dominates a baroque tomb in the Sint-Catharinakerk (St. Catherine's Church) in Hoogstraten .
