Karl Franz von der Goltz

Baron Karl Franz von der Goltz (born October 25, 1740 in Heinrichsdorf , Neustettin district ; † April 14, 1804 in Berlin ) was a royal Prussian lieutenant general , as well as secret state and war minister and head of the military department of the general directorate as well as director of the 1 Department of the Upper War College. Its importance lay primarily in the reorganization of the hospital system.

He was the son of Major General Georg Konrad von der Goltz (1704–1747) and his wife Charlotte Wilhelmine von Grävenitz (1720–1771). His brother Wilhelm Bernhard was also a Prussian envoy, his brother Leopold Heinrich Lieutenant General and also envoy.

Life

In the Seven Years' War he took part in the battle of Zorndorf , where he received the order Pour le Mérite . He was wounded in the battle of Hochkirch . He had become a cornet in the Squadron Garde du Corps on December 23, 1758 , and a lieutenant on May 26, 1762. But on November 24, 1770 he received his resignation . He went into royal Polish service and became adjutant general. On November 20, 1787, he returned to Prussian service. He became colonel of the cavalry and intendant des vivres at the 7th Department of the Higher War College . On May 16, 1789 he was raised to the rank of count, which he did not accept. On January 6, 1793 he became major general and the following year general manager, and from November 4, 1796 he received an allowance of 500 thalers. On May 29, 1798 he was also raised to lieutenant general. On January 28, 1799, the king made him secret Minister of State and War and Head of the Military Department of the General Directorate as well as Director of the 1st Department of the Higher War College. On August 13, 1803 he received the Order of the Red Eagle . He died in Berlin on April 14, 1804 and was buried in the garrison church on April 17 .

After his return to the army, he was appointed to the commission for the reorganization of the cantonal system under Möllendorf on September 20, 1788 . During the mobilization of 1790 he was director of the army in Upper Silesia and in 1793 of the Rhine army. But in 1794 he fell ill with lichen sharpness in the field and was in the hospital in Frankfurt am Main from May 27, 1794 to October 1, 1794 . After the death of Lieutenant General von Kannewurff he was on January 28, 1799 by King Friedrich Wilhelm III. (Prussia) appointed Minister of War. He threw himself into work and rearranged a lot, but in 1803 he fell seriously ill and died on April 14, 1804 in Berlin.
