Leopold Heinrich Graf von der Goltz (born March 19, 1746 in Berlin , † June 15, 1816 there ) was a Prussian lieutenant general , chief of the body cuirassier regiment and envoy .

Leopold Heinrich was the son of the Prussian major general Georg Konrad von der Goltz (1704–1747) and his wife Charlotte Wilhelmine, née von Grävenitz (1720–1771). His brother Wilhelm Bernhard was also a Prussian ambassador, his brother Karl Franz was Lieutenant General and Minister of War .

Military career

In February 1758 Goltz was employed as an Estandartenjunker in the Gensdarmes regiment and on October 18, 1758, a cornet . During the Seven Years' War he was wounded in the Battle of Hochkirch . He was in the siege of Olomouc and the battles of Zorndorf , Liegnitz and Torgau , and also in the battles of Hoyerswerda and Hohengiersdorf. Goltz became a lieutenant on June 12, 1761 and a staff officer on October 25, 1775 . He took part in the War of the Bavarian Succession , became a captain and company commander on January 6, 1779, and a major on November 24, 1786 , and a colonel and real officer of the gendarme on April 11, 1789 .

He had already been sent on diplomatic missions under Frederick II , but on May 8, 1789, he was appointed envoy extraordinary and plenipotentiary minister in St. Petersburg , where he presented the letter of credentials on June 22, 1789 . On September 9, 1789, he was also raised to the Prussian count status. On February 7, 1793, he also received the character as a major general . The king called Goltz back from St. Petersburg on February 24, 1794 and awarded him the Order of the Red Eagle . Goltz was not very pleased with his recall; he turned down the offer of a dragoon regiment . So at first he only got the pension as major general of 1000 thalers, which the king increased to 1200 thalers. On January 1, 1795 he was nevertheless chief of the body cuirassier regiment and on May 23, 1796 with his regiment assigned to the observation army in Westphalia. On February 17, 1797, Goltz received his resignation and a pension of 2000 thalers a year. He received the character of Lieutenant General on January 10, 1807.

Goltz is buried in Luisenfriedhof II in Berlin-Wilmersdorf .

Goltz was married to Eleonore Juliane von Maltzahn († January 15, 1798 in Berlin). The couple had the following children:
