After training in the cadet corps, Karl Urban joined the Austrian army and in 1848 was the first officer to refuse to obey the new constitution to the new government for Hungary under Prime Minister Lajos Batthyány .
With 1,500 border guards he suppressed the uprising of the approximately 10,000 strong Szekler and on November 18, 1848 defeated the insurgents near Cluj-Napoca . In the Sardinian War in 1859 Urban commanded the IX. Corps of the Second Army of the Imperial and Royal Army . He first took part in the battle of Montebello and was shortly afterwards transferred north to take command of a mobile division with which he was able to advance the advance of the alpine hunters (Italian: Cacciatori delle Alpi ) under Giuseppe Garibaldi on the right wing of the Austrians should face. Urban had already narrowed Garibaldi's troops at Varese and San Fermo at the end of May . At Treponti he finally caught up with Garibaldi and 4,000 soldiers on June 15. After a brief skirmish, the Cacciatori delle Alpi fled and the battle was lost for Garibaldi. After the defeat of the Austrians at Magenta , Urban’s troops had to fight their way through a series of sometimes bloody Arrièregarde battles on the Mincio .
After the Battle of Solferino , Urban was given the command in Verona . In Italy he is best known for the execution of new members of the Cignòli family in Torricella Verzate on May 20, 1859.
