Karl Gärtner (General)

Karl August Gärtner (also Don Carlos Gärtner ) (born October 18, 1811 in Wieda ; † March 8, 1869 in Madrid ) was a German-Spanish officer .

Life

Born as the son of a lower ironworker and ironworker, Gärtner studied law in Jena from 1829 . During his studies he became a member of the Jena fraternity in 1829 . He was friends with Gustav Körner and Maximilian Heinrich Rüder . He either left Germany in 1831 and went to Belgium , where he joined the newly created army as a lieutenant , or he only went to England after the Frankfurt Wachensturm in 1833 to join a Foreign Legion for the rights of Queen Maria II Gloria of Portugal to fight against her brother Dom Miguel . He later served the Infanta Sabella in Spain against Don Carlos' claims to the throne . In the Carlist War from 1833 to 1839, he was last promoted by Ramón María Narváez as Brigadier General i. Usually used. With him he was on a commission in Paris for a year to study the French military organization . In Paris he married the much younger Olympia Vaillant de la Haye. In 1864 he became major general and was then in command of the uprising in Barcelona and fortress commander . He became vice governor of Granada and returned to Madrid in 1865, where he died as governor general in 1869 .

As a connoisseur of military history, he published in French and Spanish journals.
