Karl Gutmann

Karl Sebastian Gutmann (born January 20, 1854 in Hochstetten , Baden , † September 18, 1931 in Breisach am Rhein ) was a German elementary school director and prehistoric .

Life

Gutmann, son of a farmer in Breisgau , entered the Alsatian public school service. He was involved in the natural sciences and was the editor of an agricultural weekly. After taking up a teaching position in Egisheim , he turned to archaeological research, which he then continued after a transfer to Mulhouse in Sundgau . His research covered the periods from the Neolithic to the early Middle Ages .

In 1909 he gave up teaching and received his doctorate in 1913 at the University of Strasbourg with a thesis on the Hellenistic-Roman relief images . After the First World War , he became the district administrator of the prehistoric and early historical monuments for the districts of Breisach and Emmendingen . In this role, he dug several cemeteries of the Merovingian period in Emmendingen Oberrotweil and contributed observations to the landscape history of the Upper Rhine Valley on dugout canoes in Durmersheim and Altfluren at Rastatt in.
