Karl Heinrich Freiherr von Kleist (born October 1, 1801 in Niesky ; † December 22, 1870 ) was a Prussian politician .

Life

origin

Karl Heinrich came from a branch of the Kurland- based line of his old family from the Pomeranian nobility who had returned to Prussia and settled in Upper Lusatia . He was the son of Carl Friedrich von Kleist (1736-1816). From the age of ten he was educated for three years in the Moravian Brethren in Großhennersdorf . After the death of his father, Prince Heinrich XXXVIII took over . Reuss and the preacher Nitzschke assumed guardianship over him.

Military career

In November 1817 Kleist entered the Prussian Army's 12th Hussar Regiment as an officer candidate . In 1820 he was first portepee - ensign and in the same year second lieutenant . In 1835 he was the leader of a militia - squadron in Spremberg . On November 29, 1838, he was honored as prime lieutenant due to invalidity .

Political career

From then on he managed the Mönau, Rauden and Lieske estates in the Hoyerswerda district, which he had acquired in 1839 . Goods that he sold again a year later in order to use the proceeds to purchase the 2000 hectare Moholz manor in the Rothenburg district in Upper Lusatia for 50,000 thalers . In addition to cultivating his lands, he was also politically active. He was initially employed as a district deputy of the Rothenburg district from autumn 1840 to 1856 with municipal tasks and in 1844 became the regional elder of this district. An office that he held until 1856. In addition, he was elected to the Prussian House of Representatives for the 1st constituency of Upper Lusatia in 1849 . He retained the mandate as a member of parliament until 1851.

On August 30, 1861, his Russian baron title as a Prussian baron was recognized by the Prussian crown through the highest cabinet order .

Kleist was married to Agnese Natalie Alexandrine von Haugwitz on May 23, 1837 . The couple had four sons, including the later Prussian Lieutenant General Karl Ernst von Kleist , and a daughter.
