Karl Ernst Freiherr von Kleist (born July 14, 1839 in Niesky , † March 5, 1912 in Liegnitz ) was a Prussian officer , most recently lieutenant general and commander of the 3rd Cavalry Brigade .

Life

origin

Karl Ernst came from the after Kurland emigrant branch of his Pomeranian uradeligen sex . Although he came from this branch, but belonged to a back migrated to Prussia line from which his father on 30 August 1861, the recognition of the Russian Baron title as a Prussian baron received. Karl Ernst was the eldest son of Karl Heinrich von Kleist and his wife Agnese Natalie Alexandrine, born von Haugwitz (* January 27, 1807, † March 26, 1882). His father was a Prussian Premier Lieutenant a. D. and from 1849 to 1851 member of the Prussian House of Representatives .

Military career

As was customary for young noblemen at the time, Kleist chose the soldier profession. He therefore resigned as Portepee - ensign on 12 March 1859 in the regiment of dragoons fourth of the Prussian army one. In 1860 he was appointed Second Lieutenant and transferred to the 7th Dragoon Regiment . In 1862 he joined the 8th Dragoon Regiment and was promoted to Prime Lieutenant in 1866 and Rittmeister in 1869 . During the war against Austria in 1866, Kleist and his regiment took part in an attack near Nachod . He also took part in the war of 1870/71 and received the Iron Cross ; he was also present at the imperial proclamation in Versailles . In 1880 he was promoted to major , and from 1882 Kleist was a regular staff officer in the Guard Hussar Regiment . In 1887 he was appointed commander of the 8th Dragoon Regiment in Oels . Then Kleist rose to command of the 3rd Cavalry Brigade in Allenstein in 1889 . In 1895 he was put up for disposition as lieutenant general and adopted into retirement.

Honors

The city of Namslau bei Oels, where he had been garrisoned for many years, had made him an honorary citizen .

family

Kleist was married twice. First since August 31, 1864 with Therese von Watzdorf (* May 27, 1842, † September 14, 1872). After her death, he married Johanna Freiin von Ohlen and Adlerskron on August 23, 1878 (* July 10, 1860, † February 14, 1924). He had five children from his marriages, two sons and daughters from the first and one daughter from the second marriage.
