Karl Herold
Karl Herold (born November 6, 1921 in Kulmbach ; † September 1, 1977 there ) was a German politician ( SPD ).
From 1969 to 1976 he was Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Minister for Internal German Relations .
biography
education and profession
After attending primary school, Herold, who was of Protestant faith, completed an apprenticeship as a baker in Kulmbach, which he completed in 1938 with the journeyman's examination. From 1940 to 1945 he took part in the Second World War. During this time he voluntarily served in the air force division "Hermann Göring" , against the will of his father, who was a long-time SPD city councilor. In 1946 he passed the examination as a master baker.
Herold was heavily involved in the care of war graves . He took part in several excavation and reburial activities abroad.
As an entrepreneur and politician, Karl Herold was interested in the cultural profile of the public appearance and image. Following the American model, he had the graphic artist Hans Lewerenz designed a uniform and consistent appearance for his company with lettering and company logo ( corporate design ).
In the Arbeiterwohlfahrt Herold was district chairman in Kulmbach and member of the district committee for Upper and Middle Franconia, later also state committee for Bavaria and later deputy federal chairman.
politics
Herold joined the SPD in 1949 and became deputy district chairman in 1950 and district chairman in the Kulmbach district just one year later . He later became deputy chairman of the Bayreuth sub-district and a member of the SPD's Franconian district executive.
From 1960 to 1970 Herold was a member of the Kulmbach city council . He was a member of the German Bundestag from 1953 to 1976 . He always entered the Bundestag via the Bavarian State List .
Herold, who belonged to the right wing of the SPD, is considered to be the founder of the sewer workers in the SPD parliamentary group , along with Egon Franke .
Before the federal election in 1976 (which took place on October 3), Herold renounced his candidacy for the Bundestag in view of his health and also left the Federal Ministry for Internal German Relations , where he had been Parliamentary State Secretary since the change of government in 1969 . From 1969 a red-yellow coalition ruled under Federal Chancellor Willy Brandt and began a new Ostpolitik .
Public offices
On October 22, 1969, Herold was appointed Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister for Internal German Relations in the Federal Government led by Federal Chancellor Willy Brandt . He kept this office under his successor Helmut Schmidt . After the federal election in 1976 , Herold resigned from the federal cabinet on December 15, 1976 .
Honors
- Herold was awarded the Bavarian Order of Merit on May 14, 1965 .
- In 1974 he received the Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Federal Republic of Germany.
- In 1976 he received the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
- In 1977 he received the Great Cross of Merit with Star and Shoulder Ribbon from the Federal Republic of Germany.
- He was awarded the Marie Juchacz plaque from the Arbeiterwohlfahrt in 1977.
- In 1977 he became an honorary citizen of Kulmbach.
- The Karl-Herold-Straße in Forchheim and Zwiesel and a retirement village of the workers' welfare in his home town received its name.
