Baron Karl Joseph Heinrich von Merz zu Quirnheim (born February 16, 1747 in Quirnheim , Electoral Palatinate , † February 9, 1802 in Quirnheim, France ) was the last owner of the lordship of Quirnheim and Bosweiler .

Life

Headquarters in Quirnheim

In the years 1777 to 1796 he led a process at the Reich Chamber of Commerce under Reich Chamber Court process number 85 and was recorded as a party to the proceedings in 1791 and 1798.

As a result of the First Coalition War , Germany on the left bank of the Rhine became part of the French Republic . Due to the associated extension of the abolition of all noble privileges by the French Revolution , the Merz family lost not only the title of nobility but also the property associated with the position of feudal lord .

Karl Joseph Merz von Quirnheim was named with several others in 1799 in an advertisement of a conspiracy in the canton of Kirchheim .

When he died in 1802, a burial could take place in the family grave despite the republican authorities.

family

Karl Joseph was born the son of the electoral Mainz councilor Karl Joseph Alois Mertz von Quirnheim and Freiherr auf Bosweiler (1710–1748) and Marie Caroline Baronesse de Grisheim (1715–1791). He married Maria Josepha Susanna Komtess von Lasser (1746–1777) in the Merz family church in 1773. Two (genealogically) proven sons were born to the family: Karl Albert Heinrich and Georg Karl Heinrich . A third son, Friedrich Joseph, can be found in the church records .

Karl Joseph von Merz represented the fourth and last generation who ruled Bosweiler and Quirnheim after Imperial Knight Quirinus von Merz († 1695), Chancellor of the Electorate of Mainz and the Bishopric of Speyer . The family rose to imperial barons with the grandfather of Karl Joseph, the church donor and Hofpfalzgrave Johann Wilhelm Merz von Quirnheim (1652–1718), both electoral court counselor and imperial councilor and Reichshofrat; at the same time the rule became a barony .

Karl Joseph, his parents and his wife are noted on the metal epitaph in the main church of Merz St. Oswald (in Boßweiler )
