Life

Karl Köhle studied medicine and psychology in Hamburg, Vienna and Munich, in 1966 he passed the medical state examination . He did his doctorate with a study of psychosocial factors in the genesis of peripheral arterial occlusive diseases with Walter Seitz in Munich. In order to combine internal medicine and psychotherapy in further training and clinical work, he went to Thure von Uexküll at the Reform University of Ulm in 1967 . In 1975 he received the Venia legendi for "Internal Medicine and Psychosomatics".

In 1984 he accepted the professorship for psychosomatic medicine and psychotherapy at the University of Cologne and took over the management of the clinic of the same name as medical director. Since his retirement in 2005 he has been working in his own practice.

Projects

The area of "Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy" should also help to integrate the biopsychosocial concept of understanding into other areas of patient care. In the “Internal Psychosomatic Clinic” project, Karl Köhle in Ulm, together with the nursing director Ilse Schulz († 2009), the nursing scientist Antje Grauhan († 2010) and the nursing department, implemented and evaluated a corresponding training and organizational model. Among other things, he was able to show that in this setting the attitude and communication behavior of the employees towards the patients developed in line with the concept. A documentary brought this approach to work to a wider public.

In Cologne, it was possible to expand cooperation with other subjects via consultation services and to set up a polyclinic and a ward for specialized diagnostics and psychotherapy. Research projects focused primarily on the further development of medical communication behavior in practice, problems in psycho-oncology , psychocardiology and psychotraumatology as well as the clinical significance of disturbances in emotion perception ( alexithymia ).

With the medical didactics working group, he contributed to the development of the Cologne model course in medicine , in particular to the implementation of modern learning and examination formats , to the promotion of communicative competence and to the connection of psychosomatic concepts of understanding with the content of other subjects. Since 1975 Karl Köhle has been co-editor of the textbook "Psychosomatic Medicine" founded by Thure von Uexküll .
