Karl Leberecht Krutzsch (born May 23, 1772 in Wünschendorf , Erzgebirge , † November 6, 1852 in Tharandt ) was a German forest and agricultural scientist . He taught for over three decades as a professor at the Saxon Academy for Forestry and Farmers in Tharandt. In a pioneering way, he promoted the expansion of scientific soil science into an independent teaching and research area.

Karl Leberecht Krutzsch, son of a village school teacher, studied theology at the University of Leipzig from 1795 and worked as an educator after the preacher's examination. From 1805 to 1808 he devoted himself to scientific studies at the Collegium Carolinum in Braunschweig . After spending several years in French-speaking Switzerland , he studied agriculture with Albrecht Daniel Thaer in Möglin from 1812 to 1813 . Krutzsch turned down an offer by Thaers to become a science teacher at his institute in Möglin. Instead, he took on a teaching position at the forest academy in Tharandt , headed by Heinrich Cotta . In 1816, after this educational institution was elevated to the status of "Royal Saxon Forest Academy", he was appointed professor . He deserves the credit that an agricultural training institute was attached to this forest academy in 1830 (since then "Academy for Forestry and Agriculture in Tharandt").

Krutzsch held lectures on chemistry , physics , agricultural technology , geology , mineralogy and soil science at this academy until 1849 . At an early stage he recognized the need to improve the soil science education of students at forestry and agricultural training centers. His teaching and research focus was in the field of forest soil science .

The main scientific work of Krutzsch is his two-volume textbook "Gebirgs- und Bodenkunde für den Forst- und Landwirth" : the first volume "Gebirgskunde" appeared in 1827 (2nd edition 1844), the second volume "Abriß der Scientific Soil Science" in 1842 ( 2nd ed. 1847). The additional title in the second editions, "For instruction and entertainment for practical forestry and agriculture who lack scientific instruction" , underlines Krutzsch's intention to integrate theory and practice of soil science in a teaching building. By working out the relationships between soil, plants and climate, he tried to derive regularities and make the findings usable for practical forestry.

Of his other writings, a study on forestry education (1820), a work on the life and nutrition of the bark beetle (1825) and a report on his own observations in the breeding of silkworms (1838) should be emphasized . The topics show the diversity of his scientific areas of interest. In retirement he published an “idea for a cold air house as a replacement for the rock cellar for beer breweries (1851). His memoirs , published in the same year, are significant for the history of science .
