Karl Ludwig Peter

Karl Ludwig Peter , (born April 6, 1808 in Freyburg (Unstrut) , † August 11, 1893 in Jena ) was a German historian and educator .

Life

At the age of 14, Peter came to the Pforta State School in 1822 and stayed there until 1827. In the same year he began to study mathematics at the University of Halle ; later switched to philology and theology. In 1831 Peter successfully finished his studies and got a job at the Latina in Halle (Saale) . Later he switched to the Pedagogy of the Francke Foundation in the same city as a teacher . Here he edited Cicero's Orator and Brutus for a school edition in 1830 .

In 1835 Peter was appointed director of the Bernhardinum grammar school in Meiningen ; In 1843 he was appointed consistorial and school councilor in Hildburghausen . Peter's career in 1848 led to his appointment to the school council in Meiningen and in 1853 he was entrusted with the management of the grammar school in Anklam . One year later, Peter took over the management of the secondary school in Stettin and in 1856 he was brought back to Schulpforta as director, which he managed with great success for 17 years. During these years Peter regularly published essays in the school programs and also edited Tacitus' Agricola and Dialogus for a school edition.

At the age of 65, Peter retired in 1873; but at the same time took on a teaching position as honorary professor for history at the University of Jena for a few years .

Karl Ludwig Peter was the father of the philologist Hermann Peter .
