Karl Möbius (sculptor)

Karl Möbius (born May 20, 1876 in Borna near Leipzig, † February 27, 1953 in Berlin ) was a German sculptor . He studied at the Dresden School of Applied Arts and the Berlin Art Academy . Möbius created a large number of works related to German colonial history and is therefore an outstanding representative of colonial sculpture.

  • 1909/1914: Carl-Peters , intended for a construction in Dar es Salaam in 1914, which was prevented by the outbreak of war; Returned to Germany by the British in 1921 and erected in Helgoland in 1931. 1944 melted down for armament purposes except for the head preserved as a bust
  • 1912: Hans Dominik monument in Kribi ( Cameroon ), moved to Frankfurt (Oder) in 1933 , melted down in 1942 for armament purposes
  • 1913: Hans-Dominik-Monument for Yaoundé (Cameroon), later erected in Hamburg, at the university
  • 1921: Javelin thrower sculpture in the Volkspark Wilmersdorf in Berlin, melted down for armaments purposes in 1944, erected in 1954 as a replica
    • received as a second casting in 1931 for the Allianz Stadium in Berlin-Mariendorf
  • 1922: Workers' monument in Oldenburg, at the Friedrich-August-Hütte
  • 1925: Bronze medallion on the colonial memorial stone in Nordhausen, not preserved
  • 1926: Carabinier memorial in Borna, Fallen Memorial of the Royal Saxon Carabinier Regiment (2nd Heavy Regiment)
  • 1926: Obelisk as a memorial to the fallen for the Cameroon Protection Force in Frankfurt (Oder), not preserved
  • 1931: Monument "German land in foreign hands" on the Döberitz military training area (monument to commemorate the colonies and territories lost in 1919 by the Treaty of Versailles ), not preserved
  • 1933: Relief on the memorial for those who died during internment 1916–1919 of the Cameroon Protection Forces on Fernando Poo in Malabo (Equatorial Guinea)
  • 1933: Colonial war memorial in Halle (Saale), melted down for armament purposes during World War II
  • before 1939: Gerhard Rohlfs monument in Libya
