Karl Maria Raimund (Arenberg)
Karl Maria Raimund Duke of Arenberg (French: Charles Marie Raymond duc d'Arenberg ) (born April 1, 1721 at Enghien Castle in Enghien ; † August 17, 1778 in Enghien ) was an Austrian field marshal and Reichsfeldzeugmeister .

He was the eldest son of Leopold Philipp Herzog von Arenberg . He became his successor as the fifth Duke of Arenberg . He was also Duke of Aarschot and Croÿ . In 1748 he married Luise Margarethe, the heir to Count Ludwig Engelbert von der Mark und Schleiden . With this he had several children: Among them was his successor Ludwig Engelbert Herzog von Arenberg , August Maria Raymund Graf von der Mark , their daughter Maria Leopoldine, later married to Joseph Graf von Windischgrätz , Maria Flora married to Wolfgang Wilhelm Herzog von Ursel and Marie Louise Franziska married Prince Ludwig Joseph von Starhermberg.
Life
Under the command of his father, then field marshal and generalissimo of the imperial troops in the Netherlands , he took part as a lieutenant colonel in the campaign of 1743 during the War of the Austrian Succession . He was then appointed colonel and owner of the 2nd Walloon Infantry Regiment. This was set up by himself. He commanded the regiment in the campaigns of 1744 and 1745. In 1745 he became colonel of the Baden-Baden regiment. A year later he was promoted to major general. In 1748 he played an important role in the defense of Maastricht .
After his father's resignation, Karl Maria Raimund von Arenberg became governor (Grand-Bailli) of Hainaut and Mons from 1740 . In 1754 he was given the so-called Infantry Regiment No. 21 and remained its commander until his death.
During the Seven Years' War he initially served in the Bohemian theater of war. He took part in the Battle of Prague and also distinguished himself in numerous subsequent battles.
In 1758 he was appointed Feldzeugmeister . On October 14th of that year he played an important role in the battle of Hochkirch as commander of the right east wing of the Austrian army. For this he was awarded the Grand Cross of the Military Maria Theresa Order . In the campaign of 1759, he temporarily commanded independently operating corps. However, he was defeated near Dresden on October 29th by the troops of the Prussian general Wunsch . His commitment to the Austrian defeat at Torgau on November 3, 1760 was praised. He was badly wounded in the process.
This meant the end of his active service in a campaign. In 1776 he was appointed privy councilor and a year later field marshal .
