Karl Markus Michel

Karl Markus Michel (born September 4, 1929 in Hong Kong ; † November 15, 2000 in Berlin ) was a German essayist and editor . From 1961 to 1974 he worked as an editor at Suhrkamp Verlag . From 1975 until his death he published the cultural magazine Kursbuch . Together with his wife Eva Moldenhauer , Karl Markus Michel was also responsible for a newly edited complete edition in 20 volumes of the works of Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel .

Life

Karl Markus Michel was the son of a German missionary . He spent his childhood and youth in Darmstadt. After graduating from high school, he studied German literature, philosophy, sociology and art history in Munich and Frankfurt am Main. There he was a student of Kurt May and belonged to the circle around his assistant at the time, Walter Höllerer . A planned dissertation on Franz Kafka remained unwritten. From 1955 to 1958 Michel worked at the Frankfurt Institute for Social Research . At the same time, he began to write articles for magazines such as the Frankfurter Hefte .

After marrying Eva Moldenhauer , Michel went to Hessischer Rundfunk in 1958 , where he worked as a radio play editor until 1961 . In 1961 he moved to Suhrkamp Verlag as an editor . There he initially oversaw the literary program together with Walter Boehlich , from the mid-1960s he played a key role in developing the scientific program. He brought authors such as Claude Lévi-Strauss , Roland Barthes and Michel Foucault to Suhrkamp. For the Hegel year of 1970, he and his wife Eva Moldenhauer published a complete edition of the works of Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel .

In 1965, alongside Hans Magnus Enzensberger, he was one of the founders of the culture and theory magazine Kursbuch , of which he was co-editor from 1971. From 1975 at the latest he was the first editor of the course book and remained so for life. In 1974 he retired from the Suhrkamp Verlag and founded by Axel Rütters the syndicate Verlag , which existed until the 1986th From 1980 he was part of the Munich editorial team of the TransAtlantik magazine founded by Enzensberger . From 1983 Michel lived in Berlin, where he died of cancer in 2000.

Works

Karl Markus Michel became famous with the essay The Speechless Intelligence in Two Parts from 1965/1966. In 1998 he received the Heinrich Mann Prize for all of his work . Hans Magnus Enzensberger gave the laudatory speech on March 29, 1998.

Karl Markus Michel's essays - around 50 in number - appeared in various newspapers and magazines, in addition to Kursbuch and TransAtlantik also in Die Zeit , in the magazine of the Frankfurter Allgemeine , in Stern , in Spiegel and in the Frankfurter Rundschau - occasionally under pseudonyms. The author himself has revised and compiled some texts in Von Eulen, Engeln und Sirenen .
