Karl Nieschlag (born May 27, 1909 in Matzen in Lower Austria ; † January 8, 1975 in Vienna ) was an Austrian academic sculptor .

Life

From 1911 Karl Nieschlag grew up in Floridsdorf and also attended school there. From 1924 to 1927 he was a student of Robert Obsieger at the Wienerberger Werkstättenschule for ceramics. From 1935 to 1939 he attended Josef Müllner's courses at the master school for sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts on Schillerplatz in Vienna and then attended Emil Pirchan's master school for set design at the same academy until 1940 . He completed both studies with a diploma.

He also undertook additional studies in music theory and piano playing at the New Vienna Conservatory , passed the state examination for music, and then took private lessons from Paul Pichier. After 1950 he set up a studio in Floridsdorf and worked, among other things, as a sculptor restorer for the Kunsthistorisches Museum .

In his idiosyncratic conception of art, Karl Nieschlag set important new impulses in the representational but very abstract performing arts. The art viewer is offered different possibilities of access, because a multitude of emotional and cognitive elements have been integrated through the comprehensive education of the artist.

Karl Nieschlag created numerous monuments for the city of Vienna and carried out work in the sacred area in and around Vienna as well as private commissions. Works by him can be seen among others:

Around 1937, Nieschlag created a naked dancer with a large scarf for the Goldscheider manufactory in Vienna , who bears the title Nocturno . The figure is made of ceramic and was produced in quantities of well over 300. It was possible to verify one of the models that have been proven so far, which is signed with the name Nieschlag. On March 29, 2020, such a figure was discussed by the art historian Wolfgang Schepers , the presenter Janin Ullmann and the owner of Schloss Reinbek in the NDR's Lieb & Teuer program . The model for the naked dancer was the expressive dancer Olga Desmond in the silent film Nocturno from 1915. This figure was created after March 13, 1938, when Austria was annexed , as it was labeled “Made in Germany”.
