Karl Pönitz

Karl Pönitz (born February 27, 1888 in Leipzig , † October 4, 1973 in Gundelfingen ) was a German psychiatrist and university professor .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1907, Pönitz studied medicine , philosophy, history and law at the University of Leipzig at the König-Albert-Gymnasium in Leipzig . In 1913 he was approved and, with a surgical work with Erwin Payr, was awarded a Dr. med. PhD . In 1913 he began his work as an assistant at the mental hospital of the University of Halle . After serving as a war assistant in the First World War from 1915 to 1919 , he received his habilitation there in 1921 for psychiatry and neurology and he became senior physician at the University Psychiatric Clinic in Halle. In 1925 he received the title of associate professor .

In April 1933 he joined the NSDAP . He was also a member of the SA and storm doctor in the German Air Sports Association (DLV). After Alfred Hauptmann's discharge , Pönitz was acting head of the university neurological clinic from 1935 to 1937. After Paul Hilpert was appointed as Hauptmann's successor in 1937, Pönitz left the University Psychiatric Clinic and became Medical Councilor for the city of Halle . He was the head of the hereditary biological and psychiatric-neurological department in the health department, inspector of the provincial sanatoriums, chief consultant for abortions and chief consultant in questions of hereditary health.

In October 1945 Pönitz was dismissed from the university, but continued to work for the city. In 1946 he was declared wearable by the Antifa Committee in Halle and joined the Liberal Democratic Party of Germany (LDP). In 1950 he received the chair for psychiatry and neurology at the University of Halle and became head of the university neurological clinic. In 1956 he retired and was still in charge of the clinic until 1958. From 1959 he was a member of the Leopoldina . In 1961 he moved to the Federal Republic.
