Karl Probst (born June 30, 1854 in Vienna ; † December 2, 1924 there ) was an Austrian genre and portrait painter .

Life

Probst, a grandson of the porcelain and glass painter Anton Kothgasser , studied from 1867 at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with Carl Wurzinger , Eduard von Engerth and Karl von Blaas , from 1871 privately with Heinrich von Angeli and continued his studies from May 25th In 1874 he continued with Wilhelm von Diez at the Royal Academy of the Arts in Munich .

In 1875 he returned to Vienna. There he initially worked as a genre painter, later he turned to portraiture.

Probst went on study trips : 1875 to Italy , 1876 to Germany , Holland , France and England , later to Greece and Turkey .

He became a member of the Wiener Künstlerhaus , where from 1874 to 1894 he mainly exhibited genre paintings and from 1881 also portraits.

In 1876 he was awarded a bronze medal for his sister's portrait at the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia . In 1882 he received a gold medal in London for the picture The Ambassador .

His two sons, Rudolf Probst (1883–1950) and Erich Probst (1885–1946) also worked as painters.
