Karl Robert Klempin (born November 19, 1816 in Swinoujscie , † April 29, 1874 in Stettin ) was a German historian.

Life

The Swinemünde merchant's son Robert Klempin attended the Jageteufel College in Stettin from 1832 to 1836 . From 1838 he studied philosophy , literature and history at the Friedrich Wilhelms University in Berlin . Leopold von Ranke counted him among his most promising students. After a final semester at the University of Greifswald , he received his doctorate on March 26, 1845 in Berlin . In the same year he became a private lecturer in Greifswald .

Because of a serious nervous problem, he had to end his academic career in 1848. Only at the end of 1852 did he go public again with historical lectures in small groups in Stettin. In 1855 he was first temporarily entrusted with the management of the Pomeranian Provincial Archives in Stettin from January 1, 1857 .

From 1869, his eyesight deteriorated so that he had to rely on help with his work. Contemporaries described Robert Klempin as shy, and after his illness as almost shy of people. He avoided appearing in public as far as possible, remained unmarried, but had a small circle of friends. Because of his reserved manner, he was hardly known outside of the specialist community. In 1874 he was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, 4th class.

Robert Klempin published individual writings and numerous essays on the history of Pomerania.
