Karl Seutemann (born February 23, 1871 in Linden ; † July 21, 1958 in Hanover ) was a German social scientist , lawyer and statistician .

Life

Karl Seutemann was born in 1871 as the son of a dentist in Linden, which was still the “largest village in Prussia ” during the course of industrialization , but soon afterwards was rising to become an independent industrial city . He grew up in the early days of the German Empire and attended Lyceum I , which later became the Ratsgymnasium in Hanover. He then studied law and political science in Berlin , in Göttingen at the Georg-August University and in Tübingen at theEberhard Karls University , where he did his doctorate on the statistically described topic child mortality of social population groups ... (see in the section on publications ).

From January 1900 until June 30, 1904, Seutemann worked in Dresden for the statistical office there, most recently as assistant director. He then worked from July 1, 1907 to May 1, 1906 in Barmen as head of the local statistical office.

From April 20, 1907, Karl Seutemann headed the statistical office in his home town of Linden, an activity which he carried out on a contractual basis under private law from January 1, 1908 .

Seutemann took over the management of the Statistical Office of Hanover on April 1, 1910, a position he held until his retirement on March 31, 1937.

Karl Seutemann was the chairman of the Association of German City Statisticians for many years . In addition to his contributions to general problems of statistics in theory and practice, he made important contributions in the areas of population, housing and financial statistics, especially in the first decades of the 20th century. With his memorandum Linden's development and the financial situation of the township in the years 1885 to 1907 , which he processed statistically at the instigation of the Linden magistrate and with the assistance of the Linden mayor Hermann Lodemann , he established on a scientific basis the " Incorporation of Linden to Hanover ”or the amalgamation of the two previously independent cities to form the later state capital of Lower Saxony.
