Karl Zuchardt

Karl Zuchardt (born February 10, 1887 in Leipzig , † November 12, 1968 in Dresden ) was a German writer and playwright.

The son of a bookseller attended from 1897 to 1906 the II. Municipal secondary school and the Petri school in his hometown. He then studied literature , history , economics and philosophy in Freiburg im Breisgau , Berlin and Leipzig . In 1910 he received his doctorate in philosophy and passed the state examination in 1911 . From 1910 to 1912 he was an assistant at the Historical Institute of the University of Leipzig .

He began teaching in 1912 at the Oberrealschule Nord in Leipzig. In 1913 he was appointed to the faculty . From 1914 to 1916 he taught at the Dresden-Strehlen teacher training college . From 1916 to 1918 Zuchardt taught at the German school in Aleppo . After the end of the First World War he returned to Germany and took on a teaching position at the Königin-Carola-Gymnasium in Leipzig. From 1919 to 1925 he worked at the German secondary school in Barcelona . From 1925 he lived in Dresden, where he taught at the Seevorstadt secondary school.

Until the end of the Hitler dictatorship, his literary work consisted mainly of stage works, after which he was limited to epics . From 1945 to 1957 Zuchardt held literature lectures at the Dresden Music Academy and the Technical University . In 1961 he received the Martin Andersen Nexö Art Prize from the city of Dresden.

Zuchardt died in Dresden in 1968 and was buried in the local Heath cemetery.
