Karl von Schwartz (theologian, 1847)

Karl von Schwartz (born May 18, 1847 in Benkendorf (Salzmünde) , † April 24, 1923 in Querum ) was a German Lutheran theologian and director of the Leipzig Mission .

Life

During his studies, von Schwartz became a member of the Germania Erlangen fraternity in 1865 . He was promoted to Dr. theol. PhD .

In the service of the Brunswick Church , Schwartz was pastor in Erkerode until 1883 . From there he went to Cremlingen , where he became superintendent . He was a strictly denominational Lutheran and founded the Evangelical Lutheran Association in Braunschweig in 1887 .

In 1891 von Schwartz succeeded Julius Hardeland as director of the Leipzig Mission Society. The introduction of a missionary widow's fund and the expansion of the mission field fall during the period of his ministry. In addition to India , German East Africa was added in 1893 . In addition, von Schwartz promoted women's missionary work . To this end, he began working with the Deaconess Mother House in Neuendettelsau under the direction of Friedrich Meyer . The deaconess houses in Dresden , Hanover , Darmstadt , Ludwigslust and Leipzig were added later. To finance this work, women's mission associations were founded at various locations and these were networked with one another. In addition, the first missionary doctor was sent out during Schwartz's time . In 1911, Carl Paul was his successor.

Von Schwartz took up a pastor again in Querum, a district of Braunschweig , and died there in 1923.

His son Karl August and his grandson Karl Adolf (1907–1994) also became Lutheran pastors. The former was provost of Brunswick Cathedral . Both were involved in the church struggle on the part of the Confessing Church in the so-called “ Third Reich ” .
