Karl August von Schwartz (born November 1, 1873 in Erkerode ; † January 30, 1943 in Braunschweig ) was a German Evangelical Lutheran pastor and cathedral preacher .

Life

Karl von Schwartz was born in Erkerode near Braunschweig in 1873. He came from a Brunswick pastor's family. His father Karl von Schwartz was pastor in Erkerode until 1883, subsequently superintendent in Cremlingen , mission director and pastor in Querum . After graduating from high school, Karl von Schwartz studied Protestant theology in Leipzig and Erlangen . After the ordination , he took up a pastorate in Bodenburg in 1900 , which at the time belonged to the Duchy of Braunschweig . He was then from 1908 to 1933 cathedral preacher at Brunswick Cathedral and at the same time provost of the Marienberg monastery . The highlights of his early office activities include the entry of the duke couple Ernst August and Viktoria Luise and the baptism of their son Ernst August in the presence of Kaiser Wilhelm II in the Brunswick Cathedral. At the time of the First World War , according to Kuessner, he was one of the "comparatively reserved patriotic preachers of the regional church".

During the Weimar Republic , von Schwartz, like his colleagues from Brunswick Heinrich Lachmund and Ottmar Palmer , was a member of the German National People's Party (DNVP). From 1927 to 1941, together with Lachmund, von Schwartz published the church newspaper Ruf und Rüstung - Braunschweiger Blätter on the development of the church in the spirit of Luther . The paper was the organ of the ecclesiastical right and was printed in the Hellmuth Wollermann publishing house on Bohlweg in Braunschweig. Von Schwartz published sermons, theological essays and time-critical articles in it. He was a member of the Landeskirchentag from 1930 to 1933. Together with Heinrich Lachmund, he was one of the co-founders of the Braunschweiger Pfarrernotbund in November 1933 at the time of National Socialism . His son, the Eilum pastor Karl Adolf von Schwartz (1907-1994), later became chairman of the pastors' emergency association. Due to his public protest against the German-Christian church policy of the new regional bishop Wilhelm Beye , Karl von Schwartz was suspended by him in 1934. His successor Helmuth Johnsen overturned the sentence in 1935 and appointed von Schwartz as pastor at the Braunschweig Brothers Church , as the Braunschweig Cathedral was to be rededicated and converted by the National Socialists into a national sanctuary . Von Schwartz was summoned several times by the Gestapo and banned from speaking in the Reich during the Second World War . He was retired against his will in 1942. Von Schwartz last lived on Roonstrasse in Braunschweig. He died in January 1943 at the age of 69 and was buried in the cathedral cemetery in Braunschweig.

According to Dietrich Kuessner, von Schwartz is one of the "outstanding theological minds of the Braunschweig regional church in the first half of the 20th century."
