Louis von Schell

Louis von Schell (born January 3, 1818 at Haus Rechen near Bochum ; † May 14, 1890 in Gütersloh ) was a German local politician who was mayor of Unna from 1851 to 1862 and then mayor of Gütersloh until 1874.

The son of Johann Carl Adolph von Schell (1767–1835) and Wilhelmine von Schell born. von Schele (1790–1842; from Uslar ) served in the military for several years after finishing school. He was then elected mayor of Unna in 1851. Eleven years later, von Schell moved his sphere of activity to Gütersloh, where he was also elected mayor on March 12, 1862. In 1874 he resigned from the mayor's office for health reasons.

During his tenure in Gütersloh, von Schell played a key role in the construction of the gas works and the Protestant hospital and poor house Barthsche Foundation , in the move to the new town hall and in the expansion of the city area. After his tenure, von Schell sat from 1877 to 1888 as a conservative member of the city ​​council . Von Schell was a member of the board of directors of the Barth Foundation and of the board of trustees of the Protestant grammar school .

Schell was awarded the Prussian Order of the Crown, 4th class, with the Cross of St. John for his numerous services in accommodating and feeding sick war veterans after the end of the Franco-Prussian War . In addition, in 1877 he received the Prussian Red Eagle Order, 4th class, for forty years of professional service.

Louis von Schell married the pastor's daughter Maria von Velsen (* April 28, 1834 - April 8, 1859) on October 31, 1855, who died after three years of marriage. On November 7, 1860 he married her sister Pauline von Velsen (* August 26, 1838 - February 11, 1898) and had a son and seven daughters with her:
