Maria Unger
Maria Unger (born October 31, 1952 in Trier ; born Maria Heinzkill ) is a German politician ( SPD ). From 1994 to 2015 she was mayor of the North Rhine-Westphalian district town of Gütersloh .
Life
Maria Unger grew up in Dudeldorf- Ordorf in the southern Eifel . After attending the local elementary school , the commercial school in Bitburg followed . In Mannheim she met her future husband as an employee of the Deutsche Bundesbahn and moved with him to Gütersloh in 1977.
She joined the SPD in 1982. In 1991 she became a competent citizen in the City Council of Gütersloh.
In the election of the German Federal President in 2009 for the election of Horst Köhler , she was a state delegate for the SPD .
Unger is married and has two grown children.
Mayoress
From 1994 to 1999 Unger was the successor to Karl Ernst Strothmann ( CDU ) honorary mayor in Gütersloh and chairwoman of the city's main and finance committee. In the first election for full-time mayor on September 12, 1999, she won the election with 54.9 percent of the votes cast. On September 26, 2004 she was re-elected with 51.0 percent of the valid votes, and in 2009 with 42.8 percent of the valid votes.
In the Council of European Municipalities and Regions she was a deputy member of the Presidium and a member of the Main Committee. In the German Association of Cities and Towns she was a member of the main committee (her deputy there is the former mayor of Erftstadt Franz-Georg Rips ) as well as a member of the committee for education, sport and culture. In the North Rhine-Westphalia Association of Towns and Municipalities she was a member of the Presidium as chairman of the working group of the Detmold administrative district until 2014 , where she is also a member of the Mittelstadt working group.
She is also, among others, a trustee of the Protestant Stiftisches school Gütersloh , the airport Gütersloh Member of the advisory board and shareholders 'meeting, in the jury for the Christian Heyden Prize , was board member of the Hospital Gütersloh , chairman of the shareholders' meeting of Gütersloh municipal library , Chairman of Stadtwerke Gütersloh and Member of the Board of Trustees of the Woldemar Winkler Foundation .
At the beginning of October 2013, Unger announced that she would like to fully utilize her six-year term until October 20, 2015, but would not run again. Henning Schulz ( CDU ) was elected as his successor in the mayor's office .
In December 2014 Unger was named Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) for her services to German-British relations . In February 2015 Maria Unger was accepted as an honorary member of the Spexard volunteer fire brigade . In March 2015 she received honorary citizenship of the Gütersloh twin town Broxtowe for her long-term commitment to the town twinning .
