Karl Wilhelm von der Aa (born January 7, 1876 in Bremerhaven , † January 1, 1937 in Leipzig ) was a German business educator .

Life

After the death of his father in 1883, the son of a master tailor spent his childhood and youth with relatives in Esens . There he attended the rector's school, took private lessons and completed the teachers' seminar in Northeim by 1896 . Von der Aa found his first job as a primary school teacher in Langenholtensen and then at the Northeimer Bürgererschule. In 1898 he was transferred to the trade school in Göttingen as an assistant teacher in order to be able to attend lectures in the economic field at the same time.

In 1900 he became a full professor of the trade department of the Gnesen commercial and trade school , but took a leave of absence just three years later in order to finish his studies at the Leipzig University of Commerce in 1904 with the commercial teaching examination.

On July 18, 1901, he married Anna Wassmann from Langenholtensen. In 1903 he became a member of the Corps Hermunduria Leipzig.

In 1905 Karl von der Aa became director of the commercial school in Kassel and in 1911 director of the municipal commercial college in Bautzen in Upper Lusatia . There he was also head of the city council from 1919 to 1922. From 1920 he was allowed to use the title of professor.

When the Senate of the Leipzig University of Commerce decided in 1922 to establish a chair for the training of commercial teachers for the first time in Germany, Karl von der Aa was chosen in 1923. This was the hour of birth of business education . He was given the chair for commercial school education and neighboring business areas, which he held until his death in 1937. From 1924 to 1926 he was also rector of the commercial college. In November 1933 he signed the German professors' confession of Adolf Hitler .

Before 1933, Karl von der Aa belonged temporarily to the German People's Party , was a member of the International Society for Commercial Education and a member of the German Association for Commercial Education . He also joined the Görlitz Freemason Lodge Zur Mörgenröte .

Works

Karl von der Aa wrote several textbooks on economics and economic geography. His textbook Volk, Raum, Wirtschaft appeared in 18 editions until 1945 and his textbook on commercial correspondence with contract customers until 1944 in seven editions.
