history
Before the regional reform in Bavaria
From the end of the 6th to the middle of the 13th century, the unusually large Karlburg valley settlement with monastery and harbor existed on the opposite side of the Main .
It was related to the hill castle Karlsburg , which was not destroyed until the Peasants' War in 1525. In 1202 Karlstadt was founded by Bishop Konrad von Querfurt . The exact date of foundation is not known. However, due to the founder's only four-year term of office, the period of origin can be narrowed down relatively narrowly.
In order to defend the Würzburg territory against the Counts of Rieneck, the city was laid out according to a plan according to an almost rectangular floor plan, which can still be seen today. The streets in the old town are laid out almost like a chessboard, but for military reasons and to protect against expansion in the event of fires, they are not completely straight.
Karlstadt was first mentioned in a document in 1225. In 1236 the castle and village of Karlburg were destroyed in the Rienecker feud. In 1244 the Karlstadt viticulture is mentioned for the first time. In 1277 there is the earliest evidence of the town seal. The city fortifications were completed in 1304. The parish of Karlstadt was first mentioned in 1339. In 1369 a hospital was founded. Between 1370 and 1515 the first, Romanesque parish church was completely redesigned into a Gothic hall. Around 1400 Karlstadt became an episcopal mint for a short time. The Oberamt Karlstadt of the Hochstift Würzburg, which belonged to the Franconian Empire , was left to Archduke Ferdinand of Tuscany to form the Grand Duchy in 1805 after the secularization in favor of Bavaria in 1803 and finally fell to Bavaria in 1814.
The local Jewish families set up a synagogue in 24 Hauptstrasse . The facility and the rituals were destroyed by SA men during the November pogrom in 1938 . A plaque on the house reminds of this.
On March 27, 1945, the Main Bridge was blown up by the Wehrmacht. From April 3 to 6, US troops bombarded the place with artillery and then occupied it on April 7.
The place Karlstadt was in the district of Karlstadt until its dissolution.
