Karol Kuzmány (born November 16, 1806 in Briesen , Kingdom of Hungary , † August 14, 1866 in Bad Stuben , Kingdom of Hungary) was a Slovak writer and Protestant theologian.

Life

Kuzmány was born as the tenth child of a Protestant pastor's family. He attended grammar schools in Dobschau and Gemer, studied theology at the University of Jena ; also attended the universities of Berlin, Leipzig and Halle and heard lectures by Hegel and Schleiermacher . After completing his studies, he worked as a teacher at the Protestant Lyceum in Käsmark , then as a pastor from 1830 to 1832 in Zvolen and from 1832 to 1849 in Banská Bystrica .

In 1836 he founded the literary magazine Hronka . His letter novel Ladislav and his verse novel Bela also appeared there . In the revolutionary year of 1848 he wrote the poem Sláva šľachetným , which later became popular in Slovakia under the title Kto za pravdu horí .

The Panslawismus suspected he had after 1848 from the then ruled by Hungary Slovakia to Vienna to move. As a theology professor, he taught practical theology and canon law there between 1849 and 1863. From 1860 he was superintendent of the Evangelical Church in Banská Bystrica.

In Vienna, Kuzmány worked on the Commission for Slavic Legal-Political Terminology under Pavel Jozef Šafárik . He was co-founder and vice chairman of Matica slovenská - this cultural institute was founded in 1863 as an expression of the Slovak national cultural awareness under Hungarian rule. It is considered the national institution of all Slovaks.

Kuzmány was an important figure in 19th century Slovak cultural history. He initially fought for the unity of the Czech and Slovak languages, and wrote his early works in Czech. As a writer, Kuzmány is assigned to classicism , but advocated the romantic movement. He defended the Czech writer Karel Hynek Mácha against critics. Kuzmány collected and edited Slovak funeral chants ( Evangelický funebrál 1838), he translated the works of Homer , Alexander Sergejewitsch Pushkin and Adam Mickiewicz .
