Catherine of Siena Church

The Katharina-von-Siena-Kirche is a Roman Catholic branch church at Kundratstrasse 5 in Vienna - Favoriten .

history

Following the decades-long tradition of emergency and barrack churches , mainly carried by Prelate Josef Gorbach , the unusual approach of a mobile church building was developed in the 1960s with architect Ottokar Uhl . These should be able to be assembled and dismantled several times and should last 40 years with low maintenance costs. The intention was to be able to react flexibly to the fluctuations of the modern urban population.

The church planned and built by Uhl from 1966 to 1967 on the basis of a laminated timber construction with a square floor plan became the permanent solution.

In 1988 the dismantled Holy Cross Church and subsidiary church of the parish church Maria vom Berge Karmel was raised to the status of a parish church and consecrated to the patronage of St. Catherine of Siena . On November 1st, 2015 the parish was abolished. The church is now a subsidiary of the Divine Mercy parish.
