The pastoral care station St. Rafael is a former Roman Catholic church in the 21st Viennese district of Floridsdorf. Today it is used by the Macedonian Orthodox Church , as such it is consecrated to St. Naum von Ochrid . It comes from the architect Ottokar Uhl and his colleague Jörg Klinger, belonged to the parish of Groß-Jedlersdorf and is a listed building. Uhl was awarded the Austrian State Prize for Architecture for the design of this church .

history

Lively residential construction activity in the parish area of the Großjedlersdorf parish church made it necessary to build another church in the Siemensstrasse area. However, since the further urban development could not be estimated, in 1962 architect Ottokar Uhl commissioned the planning of a demountable interim church, which was realized from 1963 at Siemensstrasse 26 and consecrated on June 14, 1964.

After the pastoral care station St. Michael in Jedlersdorfer Strasse 99 was built in 1980 at the Franz-Koch-Hof community building , and the parish church St. Markus was built at Marco-Polo-Platz in 1982 as part of the Heinz-Nittel-Hof, the pastoral care station became St. Rafael closed as a parish branch church. As a result, there was a lack of courage to actually dismantle the church. The church was used as part of the categorical pastoral care of Couples for Christ - married couples for Christ . The complex was sold around 2009 and has been used as the community center of the Macedonian Orthodox Church ever since .

Pastoral care station

Uhl realized both structures with the Mero system, a supporting structure made of screwed galvanized tubular steel rods, which consists of a basic module of 2 m × 2 m, whereby the larger cube with 18 m × 12 mm forms the church designed for 270 people, while the smaller one Kubus houses the parish hall with the sanitary facilities. Both the floor and the walls, which lean against the construction, are made of lightweight concrete panels measuring 0.5 m × 2 m. Both buildings are illuminated exclusively through the roof, which is made up of pyramid-shaped plexiglass domes.

The sober building is reflected in a simple, movable furniture made of untreated softwood. The seating was U-shaped to the altar according to the considerations of the Second Vatican Council . The altar is made of wood with an integrated step in front and behind. The altar wall is emphasized by an icon-style cross by Ernst Fuchs .
