The Small Meander ( Turkish Küçük Menderes ; ancient Greek name Κάϋστρος Kaystros ) flows parallel to the lower reaches of the Great Meander (Turkish Büyük Menderes ) in a valley about 30 kilometers to the north. The river is about 130 kilometers long and flows into the Aegean Sea at ancient Ephesus or today's city of Selçuk .
The river has its source east of Boz Dağı ( 2159 m ), about halfway between İzmir and the district town of Denizli . The port of the city of Ephesus , located at the river mouth, was important in antiquity and made Ephesus the largest and most influential city in the Roman province of Asia and one of the largest cities after Rome .
The Little Meander has always contained a large amount of suspended matter . Whose sedimentation caused the ancient port several times silted up and few kilometers from the today coast is located.
