Kazem Abdullah (born July 4, 1979 in Indianapolis ) is an American conductor and musician .

Career

Abdullah began playing the piano at the age of seven and the clarinet at the age of ten . He graduated from the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music in 2000. He then studied at the University of Southern California . As a soloist for clarinet, he has appeared with the National Symphony Orchestra , the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and the New World Symphony Orchestra , among others .

He learned to conduct a. a. by Jorma Panula , Gustav Meier , Bernard Haitink and James Levine and assisted them.

Since 2006, Abdullah worked as an assistant at the New York Metropolitan Opera . He made his conductor's debut there in 2008/2009 with Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice . He worked with the Mexico City Philharmonic Orchestra, the Oregon Symphony and the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra , with which he conducted the world premiere of Gabriela Franks Peregrinos .

Kazem Abdullah is a member of the jury for the Sphinx Competition in Detroit.

On August 1, 2012, he succeeded Marcus Bosch as General Music Director of the City of Aachen ; he has signed a five-year contract. He worked with the Aachen Symphony Orchestra for the first time in October 2010 at the opening concert of the season . On July 31, 2017, Abdullah left Aachen because his contract - contrary to the expectations of large parts of the public - was not extended. Justus Thorau , who had been 1st Kapellmeister and Abdullah's representative at the Theater Aachen since the 2014/15 season , was hired as acting general music director on July 31, 2018, until a new GMD was hired.

family

The American mother is a nurse; his father comes from Sierra Leone , came to the USA to study and worked there as a lecturer in political science . The parents discovered the talent of Abdullah in childhood and encouraged him with clarinet and piano lessons. The family lives in Dayton, Ohio .
