The Saxifraga Cuneifolia ( Saxifraga cuneifolia ), also called Keilblättriger saxifrage, is a native to the mountains of Europe plant species of the genus saxifrage ( Saxifraga ).

features

Leaf rosettes of the subsp. robusta .

The wedge-leaf saxifrage is a perennial herbaceous plant ( Chamaephyte ) and reaches heights of 10 to 20 cm. It forms runners with lower leaves . The leaves are alternate in a basal rosette. They have no lime-secreting dimples, but a light-colored cartilage border. They are weakly fleshy to leathery. The basal leaves are obovate or rounded and narrowed like a wedge into the bare petiole. The leaf blade is entire in the lower third, before that usually sawed or notched with two to six teeth. The end tooth is blunt and often shorter than the lateral ones.

The loosely paniculate inflorescence is often downy covered with glandular hairs. The sepals are knocked down during flowering. The petals are white, they usually have yellow points at the base. They are 2.5 to 4 mm long and 1.5 to 2.5 times as long as the sepals. The pollination is done by insects. The flowering period extends from May to August.

The two-horned, many-seeded capsule fruit does not disintegrate when ripe.

The species has chromosome number 2n = 28.

Distribution and locations

The wedge-leaf saxifrage occurs from northwestern Spain (Sierra Meirama) over the Pyrenees and Cevennes as well as over the Alps and the northern Apennines to Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina . There are other occurrences in the Eastern and Southern Carpathians . In Austria it is common in the southern Alpine regions, otherwise scattered to rare, and occurs in Carinthia, Salzburg, East Tyrol, Vorarlberg and South Tyrol. The clan occurring in Austria is the subspecies subsp. robusta D.A. Webb .

The wedge-leaf saxifrage grows in forests, on shaded rocks and boulders. It occurs mainly in humid locations with humus and lime poor soils of the montane to alpine altitude range . It thrives in societies of the sub-associations Galio-Abietenion or Lonicero-Fagenion.

Systematics

There are two subspecies of the wedge-leaf saxifrage:

  • Saxifraga cuneifolia subsp. cuneifolia ; it occurs only in France and Italy
  • Saxifraga cuneifolia subsp. robusta D.A. Webb ; it occurs from the Pyrenees over the Alps to the former Yugoslavia and to the Carpathians.
