No evening like any other is a feature film of the Austrian director Hermann Leitner from 1976. In the lead roles embody Heinz Rühmann and Sir Peter Ustinov , the two competing antique dealer Roeder and Billy.

action

Friedrich Roeder and the Briton Billy are antique dealers. The fact that both of them are located in the same street, and directly across the street, is a problem. While Billy focuses on the sale of imported , partly also counterfeit goods from the Far East , Roeder is an "old school" antique dealer: He only deals in goods that have a real value, whose origin can be proven and are therefore relatively expensive. Among them is a valuable Bohemian chess set from the 18th century , which was apparently hand-carved for August the Strong at that time . However, Roeder is still missing a single farmer for this game , whose whereabouts are unknown.

The Christmas season has come, and each of them celebrates it in their own way. Billy runs a Scottish bagpipe band with whiskey, which he visits. Roeder, on the other hand, celebrates Christmas in a more refined way: He is visited by a children's choir that sings Christmas carols. As a thank you, Roeder will then give you milk with cocoa, fine cakes and then a wonderful Christmas present. The differences between the two could hardly be greater.

Surprisingly, Billy also receives an invitation to Roeder's Christmas party. After a few deliberations, he will follow suit. After Billy arrives at Roeder's, Roeder tells a wonderful Christmas story in a touching way. Then the first impressions of Billy change: He now has great pleasure in spending Christmas Eve with Roeder.

When the children have left, Billy presents his neighbor, to his great surprise, with the missing pawn from the Bohemian chess game, which he had once bought himself. Both decide to play a game of chess together, with Billy moving his pieces on a cheap plastic chessboard and Roeder his own on the noble chessboard from the 18th century. This finally breaks the ice between them. The two begin to respect each other. The two former bitter competitors and completely different characters eventually even become a kind of "friends".

In keeping with the Christmas season in the film, it was first broadcast on Christmas Eve .
