The Bozen winery is a wine-growing cooperative in South Tyrol based in Gries (Moritzing), one of five districts of the provincial capital Bozen . It is an amalgamation of the former independent cellars of Gries and St. Magdalena . The around 220 winegrowers of the Bozen winery cultivate a 340 hectare wine-growing area in locations between 200 and 700 meters above sea level in and around Gries, St. Magdalena, St. Justina and Leitach . The red wines Lagrein and St. Magdalener are the leading varieties of the winery.

Articles of association of the winery cooperative in Gries near Bozen (1922)

In 1908, the winegrowers in the area around the then still independent market town of Gries united in the wine-growing cooperative of the same name. The main concern of the association of winegrowers was to refine and market the Lagrein grown there . The history of the Gries wineries is inextricably linked with a name, Alois Puff , who took over the management of the winery as chairman from 1930 and made the Grieser Lagrein a world-famous variety through untiring work until his death in 1973 . Likewise, in 1930 eighteen wine growers from St. Magdalena, St. Justina and Leitach founded a wine cooperative in order to better meet the challenges of the market and to have a better position, especially vis-à-vis wine dealers. The leading variety was the St. Magdalener wine from the Vernatsch grape.

There are three DOC single-site wines in Bolzano: St. Magdalener (including the classic sub-zone), Lagrein Grieser and Bozner Leiten. The latter plays a subordinate role today. The St. Magdalener thrives on the sandy soils on the warm slopes at the foot of the Renon . The Lagrein is at home in the permeable, easily heatable rubble soils of Gries (Moritzing) and also in Rentsch. In the higher elevations, bordering on the municipalities of Renon and Jenesien , mainly white varieties have been grown for some time. In new vineyards, the vines are mostly raised on wire frames. The traditional form of upbringing of the Pergel is only typical for the St. Magdalener (Vernatsch) and partly for the Lagrein.

In 2001 the Gries and St. Magdalena wineries merged to form the Bozen winery, following the requirement to form larger cooperatives. The goal was rationalization effects in the cellar and savings in administration and sales. Since then, the Bozen winery has been one of the largest winery cooperatives in South Tyrol , where viticulture is carried out on an area of around 5,000 hectares.

In autumn 2018, the Bolzano winery ushered in a new era with the move from the locations in Gries and St. Magdalena to the new headquarters in the Moritzing district of Bolzano. The harvest of the 220 members is processed there on a total area of 20,000 square meters. The construction volume is around 80,000 cubic meters, with a large part being built underground. One of the special features of the building is the wine architecture designed by the Bolzano office Dell'Agnolo-Kelderer : on the front of the building there is a stylized vine leaf that is visible from afar in the Bolzano basin and serves as a symbol of wine production in the South Tyrolean capital. On the other hand, the Bolzano winery has also optimized its winemaking process: At the new location, the winery is relying on vertical pressing, i.e. production "from top to bottom". The grape material is delivered to the highest point of the energy-optimized building and reaches the individual stations up to and including storage in the cellar. This reduces mechanical impacts and protects the grapes in particular.

The official opening of the new winery took place on April 6, 2019.
