Kenneth John "Ken" Mulhearn (born October 16, 1945 in Liverpool ; † March 13, 2018 ) was an English football goalkeeper . During his almost two decades long career, he was a regular goalkeeper at the lower-class professional clubs Stockport County , Shrewsbury Town and Crewe Alexandra . In between he won the English championship as a short-term "first choice" at Manchester City in 1968 .
Athletic career
Mulhearn began his footballing career in Liverpool at home with Everton FC . There he was denied the jump to the first team and so he was drawn to the fourth division Stockport County . In Stockport he was henceforth the "number 1" between the posts and was partly responsible for the fact that the club in 1967 succeeded in advancing to the third division. Shortly after the beginning of the subsequent 1967/68 season, he moved to the English elite class at Manchester City as part of an exchange deal with Alan Ogley , who was transferred in the opposite direction. Mulhearn had previously played exactly 100 league games for Stockport.
On September 30, 1967, he made his debut in the Manchester Derby against ManUnited (1: 2) after injury to regular goalkeeper Harry Dowd . He then kept his place and the season ended by winning the English championship - Mulhearn had started 33 times. As quickly as he'd played his way into the limelight, so was his retreat from there. The second leg in the European Cup against Fenerbahçe Istanbul marked the turning point when he could not control an opposing cross at 1: 2 in Turkey, so that Fenerbahçe enabled the decisive goal and was blamed for the elimination by his co-trainer Malcolm Allison . Then Mulhearn did not get the whole season and slipped in the pecking order behind Dowd and Joe Corrigan . During the 1969/70 season he made another brief comeback, but Corrigan had now become a permanent fixture on the goalkeeper position. His last use for the "Citizens" took place on February 18, 1970 against Arsenal FC (1: 1).
In March 1971 Mulhearn moved to third division club Shrewsbury Town and spent his next nine years there. The greatest success for him during this time was 1979 when he was promoted to the second division as a third division champion . Five years earlier he had gone into fourth class with the club , which was followed by direct promotion the following year. His last position was then in the fourth division Crewe Alexandra , before he returned to Shrewsbury after retirement and ran a restaurant there.
Mulhearn died on March 13, 2018 at the age of 72.
