Kenny Begins is a Swedish science fiction - action - comedy from the year of 2009.
action
Kenny Starfighter from the planet Mylta is aiming to graduate from the Fleet Academy and wants to become a "Galactic Hero". Unfortunately, he's a disinterested idiot, clumsy, and dreamer. But that doesn't prevent him from holding on to his dream. And so he makes it to the final exam, where he either has to issue 20 tickets for speeding, catch a criminal or save the whole universe in order to pass. And so he chases the people of Rutger Oversmart, who is looking for the power crystal of Emperor Zing to rule the universe, to earth to give them a ticket. He crash-lands in Pontus' house.
Pontus himself is also a social outsider who is repeatedly the victim of school thugs and other common people. When he was once again hiding in a cave, fleeing from the school hooligans, he discovered Zing's power crystal there. When he touched it, he was given the power of the crystal, which he immediately tests on the school hooligans. His secret crush Miranda doesn't like this violence, which is why he takes care of Kenny's situation first. Meanwhile, Oversmart has found out who has the power of the crystal and sends his hit men Earth, Wind & Fire to Pontus School to capture him. But Pontus escapes with Kenny and Miranda and rushes to an animal feed factory, where they suspect Kenny's communication station.
There Earth, Wind & Fire follow them and threaten them, but Pontus manages to take them all off with his superpowers, so that Kenny can send a message to the Galactic Heroes . But in the meantime, Oversmart has contacted Pontus and lures him to the Magmatech power station , where he wants to suck his strength away . This is noticed by Miranda and Kenny, who immediately go on the rescue mission and arrive in time before Pontus dies. And while Kenny takes care of the crystal's powers himself, he enables Miranda and Pontus to escape initiated by the Galactic Heroes .
However, Kenny still has the powers of Zing's crystal, which he must lose, which is why they are sucked away from him. And since he got a tremendous score for his exploits, not only did he pass the exam, but he was promoted to Captain of the Galactic Heroes .
criticism
In the tabloid Aftonbladet , Jan-Olov Andersson said that it was difficult not to like the "lovingly made [...] individually comically insane" film. It is a children's film with many allusions, in which Johan Rheborg "brilliantly played the vain and stupid" Kenny Starfighter.
Although the film "starts entertainingly" and one has to appreciate the directors for "their funny ideas and mechanical effects", Jenny Rickardson said in the tabloid Expressen , one could have made something better out of this "bumpy [...] clichéd teenage film". "
Michael Tapper gave the morning paper Sydsvenskan three out of five stars and said the film was "more a child of Captain Zoom and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy than Star Wars ". While the film includes all of the "messy highlights [of] the bizarre and far-fetched" entertainment, he would have wished for more of it.
In the daily newspaper Svenska Dagbladet , Malena Janson said that the "impressive" film could very well entertain all those who feel entertained by American comedies. She also compared it to the traditional Swedish children's film and said that "Kenny Starfighter is not a children's film, but a children's film for grown boys".
Allusions
- The scene in which Pontus wakes up in the morning with the new powers is almost identical to the same scene from Spider-Man .
- Individual terms, phrases and names are reminiscent of music history, including Wooly Bully and Earth, Wind and Fire

Kenny Begins Launched in Swedish theaters on March 25, 2009 and has not yet been released in any other country outside of Sweden.
