Asta Nielsen cinema library

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Kinothek Asta Nielsen is an association that has set itself the task of documenting women's film work and bringing it back to the cinemas. Based in Frankfurt am Main, it often cooperates with local cinemas and cultural institutions in order to organize film and lecture series, but it also operates beyond the borders of the Rhine-Main area .

The cinema is named after the Danish actress Asta Nielsen , the first European silent film star, who often caused a sensation with her androgynous , gender- breaking representation of female roles.

The first edition of the Remake film festival took place in November 2018 . Frankfurt Women's Film Festival.

Foundation and concept

The Kinothek Asta Nielsen was founded in 1990 on the initiative of filmmakers, curators, critics, students, historians and film scholars and follows on from the feminist film work of the 1970s and 80s. The co-founders include Karola Gramann , Prof. Dr. Heide Schlüpmann , Stefanie Schulte Strathaus , Prof. Dr. Martin Loiperdinger , Eva Heldmann , Prof. Dr. Heike Klippel , Doris Kern and Maria Wishmeth. This year Kinotek Asta Nielsen is celebrating 20 years.

In addition to archiving gray literature, photographs, posters, festival programs and stills, the main focus is on making the films accessible again in the cinema. In particular, the formats Super 8 and 16mm will be shown in their original form in order to make experimental and underground films as well as home movies accessible in addition to early films and to place them in a new context. The work of the Kinothek thus builds a bridge between film culture and current feminist and queer discourses. The retrospectives on female film pioneers such as Asta Nielsen , Germaine Dulac and Alice Guy , which the Kinothek Asta Nielsen organized and hosted, received national attention and were adopted by other European cinemas and festivals.
