Etymology and history

Kirberg is likely to be equated with Kirchberg and was first mentioned in 1265. The church, today's main church Sonnborn around 500 meters away , had a previous building in the 9th century. Kirberg appears as 'Kirberich' in 1614. In 1677 Kirberg is still a closed property of 18  hectares .

Around 1830 Kirberg was divided into two estates of 11½ and 11 hectares. In the address books 1896/97 the place is noted as Kirberg.

Kirberg was located in the municipality of Sonnborn , which was split off from the mayor's office in Haan in 1867 and which was renamed the municipality of Vohwinkel in 1888 when territory was ceded to the city of Elberfeld . With the founding of Wuppertal in 1929, Kirberg was accepted into the city area as part of Vohwinkel.

Today's street

The street Kirbergweg , west of Kirchofstraße , was named after this location on December 14, 1920 . Originally, a new street in the Bayer settlement on the Deutsches Ring was to be named Kirberg . The decision was made by the city council on March 24, 1954, but the road was never implemented.
