The Havdhem Church ( Swedish Havdhem kyrka ) is a country church on the Swedish island of Gotland . It belongs to the parish (Swedish församling ) Havdhem in the diocese of Visby .

location

The church is located in the south of Gotland near the road 142 from Hemse to Burgsvik , 53 km south of Visby , 8.5 km south of Hemse and 15 km north of Burgsvik.

Church building

The current church building consists of a rectangular nave with an apse . The originally apseless choir is the oldest part of the church. It dates from the first half or the middle of the 12th century. As in the early churches of Garde and Källunge , the plinth is also missing here . A very narrow window has been preserved in the north wall. The portal used later is the work of the anonymous master Calcarius from the early 13th century. The tympanum is decorated with reliefs depicting Christ and the apostles, the column capital bears depictions of human heads and tendrils. The Romanesque apse , which was built around 1200 at the same time as the nave, is, like the Trinity Church (Drotten) in Visby, adorned with blind arcades.

The nave, built around 1200, was originally lower and slightly shorter. The walls close at the top with a frieze of arches, sawtooth strips and a profiled cornice. The portal is reminiscent of the northern nave portal of the cathedral church. It is not known when the increase occurred. Perhaps this happened after a fire that struck the church in 1580. Judging by the steps on the interior of the nave wall, it was previously vaulted by one or two longitudinal barrels.

On the original west wall there was a tower, the ground floor of which was connected to the nave by a narrow arch. The tower was replaced in the middle of the 13th century by the current, significantly larger gallery tower, which until 1910 had another floor with light openings on all sides and a high point. It was lowered because it was feared that the upper part would collapse.

Choir and nave have been covered with a barrel vault made of wood since 1841, the tower chamber with a medieval, but no longer original stone vault, which was decorated with acanthus tendrils and biblical quotations in 1692.

The sacristy is on the north side of the choir . The portals are on the west side of the tower and on the south side of the choir and nave.

In the northern corner of the window by the pulpit there are fragments of Byzantine- influenced paintings.

Furnishing

  • The Triumphal Crucifix was created in the 15th century.
  • The altar is by 'J. Bartsch dy '(the younger one) and dated 1667.
  • The pulpit was carved by J. Sterling in 1679 and painted by Andreas Hamborger in 1685. At the same time the baptism was painted.
  • The epitaph on the south wall of the nave bears the inscription "Jytte Salig Trols Nilsons" and the year 1686. Jytte and Trols were the parents of Claudius Trogillides. The initials of the medieval angel of the Annunciation on the top of the canopy refer to Pastor Claudius Trogillides and his wife Barbara Jörgensdotter.
  • A portrait of a man from 1701 hangs on the north wall of the choir.

Others

In 2003 the mobile operator 3GIS installed a base station in the church tower. The antennas have been painted in the color of the tower so that they are not noticeable.
