Ganthem Church
The Church of Ganthem ( Swedish Ganthems kyrka ) is a country church on the Swedish island of Gotland . It belongs to the parish (Swedish församling ) Dalhem in the Diocese of Visby .
location
The church is located in the interior of Gotland, 22 km southeast of Visby , 7.5 km north of Roma , 25 km south of Slite and 21 km north of Ljugarn .
Church building
The church is made of natural stone and consists of a nave with a narrow apse in the east, a church tower in the west and a sacristy in the north. Most of the church dates from the Romanesque period. The oldest walls can be found in the apse, which dates from the second half of the 12th century. In the first half of the 13th century the two-aisled nave and tower were added. The east gable of the nave was built west of the west wall of the choir . In this way a double triumphal arch was created . The sacristy was only added in 1930. The outside area is characterized by the high tower with the pillared sound openings in two levels and the octagonal spire. The church has round-arched window openings on the south side, of which the western one, which is located above the south portal, is still original. Arched portals can be found in the west wall of the tower and in the south walls of the choir and nave. The interior of the church is covered by four cross vaults supported by a central column. A so-called sound pot (Swedish ljudkraka ) is walled into the top of the choir vault. Frescoes from the 15th century adorn the walls of the nave. The passion frieze on the north side has never been whitewashed, which is unusual. The remaining paintings were brought out again in 1967. Additions from later years include a new bank facility and a gallery from 1882, which has since been removed. From 1966 to 1967 the church was restored according to plans by the cathedral architect Eiler Græbel .
