The Church of Silte ( Swedish Silte kyrka ) is a country church on the Swedish island of Gotland . It belongs to the parish (Swedish forsamling ) Silte in the diocese of Visby .

location

The church is located in the southwest of Gotland, east of road 140 from Klintehamn to Burgsvik , 47 km south of Visby , 8 km west of Hemse , 19 km south of Klintehamn and 21 km north of Burgsvik.

Church building

The well-preserved floor of an earlier stave church was found under the floor of the current church when it was restored from 1971 to 1972 under the direction of architect Leif Olsson . In the triumphal arch one can even find the imprint of the gable of the stave church. The medieval brick church consists of a rectangular nave with a narrower just completed choir in the east and the church tower in the west. The building material is mainly sandstone , as is the case with many churches in southern Gotland. The choir is from the middle of the 13th century, the nave was added a little later. Towards the end of the 13th century, the tower followed, which at an unknown point in time lost its top.

The facades of the church are plastered in white, but on the edges of the corners they have facades made of carved limestone of different colors . The narrow arched windows are still original. The sound openings of the tower result in a heterogeneous collection of stone carving details. The nave and the lower choir are covered by pitched roofs with tiles. The tower is crowned by an octagonal top. There are three portals : the nave and choir portal in the south and the tower portal in the west. The tympanum of the nave portal has carved loop ornaments. The nave is covered from the inside by two tent vaults, which are separated by a wide belt arch. The choir, covered with a cross vault , has three groups of east windows and a smaller south window. The tower room is covered by a high vaulted tent. The triumphal arch and the tower arch are slightly ogival. There are frescoes from the 13th and 15th centuries. The stained glass in the east window of the choir are from the construction time. The furnishings are mainly from the 1902 restoration.

Furnishing

  • The font was made by Sighraf at the end of the 12th century. The bowl has scenes from the childhood of Jesus .
  • The pulpit is from the middle of the 18th century and has no canopy.
  • The altar has sculptures from the 13th century.
  • The organ was probably built in 1900 by AV Lundal from Stockholm or Åkerman & Lund Orgelbyggeri . In 1985 it was renovated by J. Künkel's organ workshop from Lund .

Surroundings

  • The brick parish magazine (Swedish sockenmagasinet ) in the northwest corner of the churchyard was built in 1853.
