Church building

The medieval limestone church consists of a three-aisled nave with a narrower, straight-end choir in the east and a sacristy in the north. The sacristy, the oldest part of the church, was originally added to an apse from the second half of the 12th century. The stones of the apse can be found in today's church masonry. In the later construction period, probably in the 13th century, the choir and nave were built. Deviations in the shape of the vaults and the shape of the windows indicate that the two westernmost vaults were added a little later. Seen from the outside, the church is a basilica with low ceilings (window level of the central nave above the aisles). A roof turret with an octagonal spire, which contains a bell level under a protective roof, crowns the west gable. The choir is by lower gable roof covered and the sacristy has a pent roof .

A bricked-up archway in the western wall testifies to a planned but not completed western tower. The church has four portals to the nave and a fifth to the choir. The north and south portal of the nave have the richest shape. A stone figure on the eastern choir gable with a gargoyle is said to have come from an older church. The round window of the west gable with tracery made of carved limestone dates from the 1880s. The church interior is a hall church , the central nave has slightly higher cross vaults than the side aisles. The nave has nine cross vaults supported by four heavy pillars. The choir, which also has a cross vault, is illuminated by the group of three windows and a south window. In the north wall of the choir there is a niche with a cut wooden frame, a sacrament house from the 13th century. The neo-Gothic interior of the church comes from the restoration in 1902.

Furnishing

  • The red limestone font comes from the middle of the 13th century.
  • The epitaphs are from the 17th century.
  • The pulpit is late Baroque and dates from 1737. It was donated by Governor Grönhagen.
  • Today's altarpiece with painted biblical figures was made in 1902 during the restoration. The older altarpiece was painted by Johan Bartsch in 1656 and is now hanging in the nave.
  • The organ was built in 1873 by Åkerman & Lund Orgelbyggeri from Stockholm . In 1990 the organ was renovated by J Künkels Orgelverkstad AB from Färjestaden.
