Issenia is a genus of plants withinthe nettle family (Loasaceae). It contains only two species found in southwest and northeast Africa and the Arabian Peninsula.

Vegetative characteristics

In Kissenia TYPES is upright, densely branched shrubs . A strong, fleshy taproot is formed. Nettle hair is missing.

The lower leaves are opposite, the upper alternate. The leaves are divided into a petiole and a leaf blade. The simple leaf blades are egg-shaped to kidney-shaped with a length of up to 40 centimeters, slightly lobed and furrowed on the edge.

Generative characteristics

The numerous flowers are in terminal inflorescences that are dichasia or thyrsenic-like , with one to three Parakladien . Under each of the upright flowers are two small, simple bracts .

The hermaphroditic flowers are radial symmetry and five-fold with a double flower envelope . The five long-lasting sepals are significantly longer than the petals and enlarge significantly until the fruit is ripe and crown the fruit. The five petals are cream-colored. The outer staminodes are fused and form an elongated, yellowish scale sheet ( nectar scale ). The ovary is approximately inferior, the placenta is greatly reduced, making only a few ovules from.

The irregularly egg-shaped capsule fruits do not open and contain only one or two seeds.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 24.

Occurrence

The two species thrive in rocky and sandy deserts. One of them occurs in northeastern Africa and on the Arabian Peninsula. The other species occurs in southern Africa.

Systematics

The genus pillowia was created in 1842 by Stephan Friedrich Ladislaus Endlicher in Gen. pl. suppl. Page 76 set . A synonym forissenia Endl. is Fissenia R.Br. ex Endl. orth. var.

The genus Kissenia belongs to the tribe Loaseae in the subfamily Loasoideae within the family Loasaceae .
