kitty-yo is a German independent label based in Berlin . It has three sub- labels ( kyo , kitty-cuts and Cheesedream ) and a music publisher .

history

The label was founded in 1993 by Raik Hölzel , who previously ran an antiquarian bookshop and had a program on an open channel . Soon Patrick Wagner from the band Surrogat joined them. Wagner was responsible for promotion, while Hölzel was looking for and looking after artists, production etc. a. cared.

It began in 1994 three 7 "releases of surrogate , Wuhling and kerosene , by a release party at the Berlin Isle of Youth was accompanied spontaneously 500 visitors crowded. At that time the label had no business premises and had to self- distribution First you had to gain experience in the business: contracts were not initially recorded in writing. The Wuhling band received 14,000 DM for recordings in France, which then went to the rival label City Slang with the finished recordings .

According to its own information, the label began with a start-up capital of 5000 DM and in 2001 an annual turnover of 2 million euros (?) Was made. The sales figures of the artists were partly in the higher four-digit range. Label draft horse Peaches managed to sell 100,000 CDs in 2000, according to some sources. Elsewhere Wagner speaks of the fact that the best-selling record sold 25,000 copies.

The two founders have been running the label full-time since 1999. In 2000 a music publisher was added. In 2001 the two founders separated. The sole proprietorship is still run by Raik Hölzel, but has not been active since Kitty-yo GmbH was founded in 2004. Employees of the label were Gustaf Sparr, Martin Frehse, Constance Brockmann and Desiree Vach.

Individual licenses to the Major EMI followed . They also worked with other indie labels, such as Weilheimer Hausmusik , Kollaps and Payola .

The Kitty-yo GmbH founded by Hölzel had to file for bankruptcy in November 2006. The reason was the rapidly declining sales figures. No recordings have been published since April 2006.

Digital releases are currently appearing under the name Kitty-yo Digital. The owner is Silke Maurer. Individual tracks from the Kitty-cuts sub-label will also be published digitally.

After Wagner separated from the label, he first worked as an A&R at Motor Music and opened his own Louisville Records in 2004 .

Hölzel works as a contemporary artist under the stage name "Force RAIK".

Principles

The label does not want to commit itself to a certain style, released in electronica , indie rock , techno and hip-hop . The decisive factor is that the operators themselves like the music very much and that it is independent. Copy protection is rejected because on the one hand no satisfactory technical solutions are seen, on the other hand the distribution of one's own music by burning CDs is also viewed as advertising. It is important to work with artists as long as possible and to build them up.
